At the end of May, Port Townsend Main Street held a meeting with downtown business owners, City of Port Townsend, and Olympic Disposal to discuss areas of downtown that are out of city compliance and solutions for business owners. The goal was to work through compliance along with ensure that trash areas in downtown are meeting the needs of both businesses and the general public.
The meeting was productive and businesses who have trash cans in city right of way areas identified locations where additional trash enclosures could be built. The City of Port Townsend is working to ensure permitting for the enclosures can be done efficiently and within code compliance.
Some interim steps while the City Planning Department reviews applications include the yellow grease trap container enclosure in the Tyler Street end. This is temporary while the business who owns this container goes through permitting and build for a new enclosure area.
Port Townsend Main Street, the City of Port Townsend in collaboration with businesses with trash cans in right of way areas and Olympic Disposal work to get these compliance and just general appearance issues solved this year.
All businesses in downtown can do their part to ensure they are properly disposing of waste in their bins, lock bins to prevent illegal dumping and keep these trash areas in private property and public right of way neat. Any illegal dumping issues can be reported to the City of Port Townsend.
