Put Your State B&O Taxes to Work in Port Townsend!
Love PT? Help keep it vibrant and thriving by pledging to the Main Street Tax Incentive Program! This innovative program allows businesses to put their state B&O taxes to work locally through Port Townsend Main Street.
Each year, the Department of Revenue partners with Washington Main Street to offer tax credit incentives to businesses who want to invest in their Main Street communities.
As a business owner who pays B&O Tax in Washington State, you can pledge to donate to PTMS through the B&O Tax Credit Program and receive a 75% tax credit on next year’s B&O Tax.
For example, if a business makes a $1,000 donation by Nov 1st 2026, they will receive a $750 B&O tax credit on their account in Jan 2027, which can be used to pay their B&O taxes. The remainder of the donation (in this case, $250) can be a tax write off in the current year.
The donation allows local businesses to support Main Street communities and provides a tax credit so it’s a win-win!

Please follow these easy steps:
Washington State Dept. of Revenue “Main Street Tax Credit” Have your SAW user ID and Password ready. Please note the SAW link is active and should take you to your login page.
- Go your SAW account at dor.wa.gov/home and enter your login User ID and Password
- Click GET STARTED
- Under the Accounts tab click EXCISE TAX
- On the excise tax page select the CREDIT tab
- Click Add Main Street Application
- Scroll down to Port Townsend Main Street Program
- Enter your pledge amount
- Click the NEXT button
- Fill in the authorization field
- And Finally hit SUBMIT — Thank you!

A business that successfully requests credit through the DOR website must make their contribution to the designated community by November 8th of that same year.
The state B&O credit becomes available starting January of the following year. Businesses must take the tax credit in the year after the donation is made – the tax credit can’t be carried forward to subsequent years and there won’t be a refund for any credit above and beyond a business’ tax liability.
This is a way to direct your state tax dollars right back into your community.
This program is unique to Washington and has proven to be a catalyst for Main Street communities since 2006!
